Sometimes you find the best accomodations there where you don’t expect to be any. Unlike Yogyakarta, Surakarta (o Solo), does’nt see a steady flow of foreign visitors, therefore, to find a budget accomodation can be quite an issue.
Tucked away, hidden in a maze of narrow alleys, there is a place called “Paradiso Guest House”. It’s just my kind of place.
It’s a huge old school type of losmen, with plenty of room and no customers, especially now during the monsoon season. One would expect such a place to be haunted…
Everywhere tropical plants decorate the white interiors, with their natural lush green.
Old mirrors and framed pictures are scattered here and there, together with old chandeliers and rattan chairs, giving a retro touch to the whole place.
I managed to get a spacious room, with double bed, fan and attached toilet for only 75000 INR, wich is a bargain and quite an impossible price in more touristic areas such Bali o Lombok.
In the morning, for an additional 2000 INR, the doorman will deliver a glass of proper javanese coffee at your door. Basically, 1 british pound could get you 7 coffes…not too bad eh..?
If you’re gonna be one of the few visitors brave enough to venture to Solo, you can get some more infos about this place here:
