If you love India but you’re travelling somewhere else in Asia, and you suddenly miss the subcontinent, then Malaysia is the place to be, especially around Deepavali, the festival of lights.

The other night, while all the Malaysian hindus were getting ready for the big party, i decided to go for a banana leaf thali and take few snapshots, a sort of Deepavali backstage.

The restaurant was super busy, with lots of people queing up to buy sweets: laddoo, gulab jamun, rasgulla…I felt like i was in Old Delhi.

To me, the Deepavali feels like the hindu Xmas: people are running around buying food, fireworks and sarees while the shops are bursting with customers and Booliwood songs are played loud from every corner.

Flowers sellers are preparing necklaces with marigolds and ladies are patiently waiting for their henna hand paint to dry: a real corner of India in the middle of South East Asia.
